Cleaning Your Humidifier
Q |
We've had a humidifier on our
furnace for years, and we've never cleaned it. Should it be
cleaned?
Does the Air Comfort Systems person clean it when he comes for our furnace tuneup? We noticed a little bit
of
white, crusty stuff on the outside of the unit a few days ago. |

The "white, crusty stuff" you
mention is lime scale, which is one reason you should have your
humidifier
cleaned each year. Inside the humidifier is a replaceable pad,
which
ought to be changed annually. We've got replacement pads for all
Aprilaire
units, and most other popular central humidifiers in our parts
department.
If you've got a portable table-top humidifier, we would recommend
calling
your hardware store, or contacting the manufacturer directly. |
| If you're feeling a little more adventurous,
there's also a small orifice and a strainer inside the humidifier,
which the manufacturers recommend cleaning yearly. Keep in mind,
though, that the parts inside are fairly sensitive to damage, and a
wrong judgement can lead to wasted water, and higher water bills. |
