Signs foreshadow a chilling failure
Beware of things that go thump in the night: they may be the sign
that your home's air conditioner is becoming a ghost of its former
self. Thumping or whining noises are one of the first signs that
a central air conditioning system is heading for a breakdown. If
you hear or see
any of the following warning signals, you'll know that a call to Air

- Icing on the pipes leading
from the indoor part of the system. A malfunctioning unit often
allows a layer of frost to form on the two pipes which lead out of the
outdoor
condensing unit. This frost represents cooling power which never
makes
it into your home!
- Sluggish performance
from a system that traditionally cools quickly. If it takes a
long time to get going or cycles on and off endlessly, chances are
there's an
underlying cause worth investigating.
- Strange noises
are often a telltale sign. Listen for a thumping sound, or a
whirring that isn't your air conditioner's normal operating noise.
- Weak cooling
from a regularly tuned unit is a signal. If it simply doesn't
seem
to cool like it used to, it's time to check things out!
