Q and Air

Builder's Regret /
On the Net

Q: Since we bought our new home, we've noticed several places where the builder cut corners to save money.  We're wondering whether the furnace might be one of them.
Our furnace runs constantly when the weather gets cold, and my wife complains that she often feels chilled indoors.  Could the builder have put in a small furnace to save money, and left us with a unit that's too small to heat our house?
A: As the weather gets colder, it's not at all unusual for any furnace...even an adequately sized one...to run nonstop for a period of time.  This is especially true when the temperature outside gets down to 0o F.
The bigger question can be answered by taking a look at your home's thermostat.  When you look at it over the course of a day, there shouldn't often be a big difference between the temperature it's set to and the actual temperature in your home.  If it's always colder than you want it, or if you must set the temperature artificially high to keep things comfortable, chances are your furnace isn't adequately sized.  On the other hand, your thermostat could also be faulty.  The best way to resolve this is to schedule an Air Comfort Systems Energy Maintenance Visit.  We can test everything, and recommend a solution that would yield the greatest possible indoor comfort.

Q:   Is it possible to buy a furnace over the Internet?  After all, you're buying it pretty much sight unseen until they install it in your home anyway, aren't you?
A: We don't know about buying a furnace on the Internet (we wouldn't advise it), but we definitely need to correct your second point.  You can actually see, hear and touch the furnaces we sell in action.  All it takes is a visit to Air Comfort Systems' showroom.  Models from many of our major manufacturers are literally installed in a special room at our S. 70th St. location, ready to run for your inspection.  This gives you an opportunity to hear each product in operation.  You can inspect the workmanship, look at the mechanics and feel the heat...a nice added benefit on a cold Winter day.
If you are considering buying a furnace, you needn't feel as though you're buying anything sight unseen.  Begin by taking a look at our showroom, open Monday through Friday from 9-4, plus Wednesday evenings 'til 6 and Saturdays 9-1.  In our mind, it's features like our showroom that help you distinguish whose product is superior, and who is simply blowing hot air!
