A Cut-Rate Duct Cleaner's Dirty Tricks
At first glance, it looks like a good
deal...
Read the fine print in many duct cleaning ads however, and you'll
see why homeowners who respond wind up paying a good deal more than
they expected.
"We see them all the time, and it really frustrates
us," said Jill Kransel, a service coordinator at Air Comfort
Systems. "We get calls from people who get attracted to the
come-on price, have the service done, wind up paying more than they
expected and still need us to come out and clean their ductwork."
While the alluringly low price at the top of the ad
is all the homeowner notices, the small print at the bottom is what
really makes the difference.
- "Up to 12 Vents"
limits the size of the job, so it's easy to claim the promotional price
doesn't apply to your home.
- "One free main duct"
catches many customers unawares. Most homes have two or three
main ducts. Will you leave the job half done, just to get the
artificially low price?
- "Travel charges apply"
the ads states. Travel from where, and is there a charge per
mile? Here's another opportunity to tack on an added cost.
At the bottom line, even getting their low price
isn't much of a deal. "When you stop to think of it, you realize
that a low price means they are cutting corners somewhere," said
Kransel. "Often their equipment isn't really designed for proper
duct cleaning, so it doesn't do as good a job. They may be doing
the cleaning without adequate filters, which means you could wind up
with 30 years of duct dust drifting around your house after they
leave. That'll sure make for a
good night's sleep."
"In the end, you get what you pay for," she
concluded. "It's better to get somebody who knows how to do it
right the first time...especially since it's your home we're talking
about."
