Spring Tips for Your Home's Air Conditioning System
Reset
the pullout switch in your central air conditioner's disconnect box
(which you pulled out last fall) or turn on the necessary circuit
breaker. This small step prepares your central air for instant
operation when the weather turns warm.
Flip
the switch on your thermostat from heating to cooling, and change
the programs of any setback thermostats.
Trial
Run — If you haven't turned your central air on yet this
season, give it a brief trial test run. By taking this commonly
overlooked tip, you'll solve any present problems before the
Summertime rush
Change/clean
filters — Disposable air filter users, now is the time to
change. If you put an Air Control Master III in your
electronic air cleaner slot last winter, change it now. The
"hardware store filters also need changing, as they do every
month. Monthly cleaning of the permanent filter elements of
electronic air cleaners should also be on your agenda. If the old
filter is very dirty, you may wish to consider a spring duct
cleaning.
Clean
any leaves, branches or debris away from the air conditioner's
outdoor unit.
Cold
air returns — Close your home's lower cold air returns (the
ones nearest the baseboard) and open the upper ones. If you have
high and low cold air returns that open and close, close the lower
set (used during winter) and open the upper duct.
Chimney liner inspection — If you
own a chimney liner that's under warranty, call Air Comfort Systems
to schedule a chimney inspection. Remember, failure to have a
professional inspection performed annually will void your warranty.
Make a date — Schedule your Air
Comfort Systems Maintenance Visit for later this summer.
